Description

The CHRP program supports focused collaborative research projects involving any field of the natural sciences and engineering and the health sciences. If successful, the projects will lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, or economic development in health-related areas. The proposed project may range from fundamental knowledge creation to research on knowledge application relevant to industry or public policy. Typically, support will be for up to three years for defined projects with milestones, a beginning, an end, and clear decision points.

In the context of improved health for Canadians, the objectives of the Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) program are to:

  • translate research results to end users/stakeholders; (the mechanism for translation must be clearly described);
  • encourage the NSERC and CIHR communities to collaborate and integrate their expertise and research activities;
  • advance interdisciplinary research leading to knowledge and technologies useful for improving the health of Canadians;
  • train highly qualified people in collaborative and interdisciplinary research of relevance to health.

Funds Available

CIHR's contribution to the amount available for this initiative is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them.

  • The total amount available for this initiative is an investment of at least $1.36 million per year for 3 years.
  • CIHR Institutes listed in the Partner/Collaborator section of this funding opportunity may offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to their specific research priority or mandates.

Additional projects related to CIHR Institute strategic priorities identified below may be supported.

Partner/Collaborator Description

Note: Additional partners/collaborators, including partners/collaborators from industry and the private sector are expected to join this funding initiative over the coming year.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
CIHR is Canada's major federal funding agency for health research. Its objective is to excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge and its translation into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products and a strengthened Canadian health care system.

CIHR Institute of Aging (IA)
In the context of its Strategic Initiative Announcement - Mobility in Aging, the CIHR Institute of Aging will consider co-funding applications within which research activities address research and knowledge translation needs and emerging opportunities within the range of intrinsic and extrinsic challenges associated with Mobility in Aging. Research on Aging is that which addresses issues of aging and/or the aged as essential elements of the research objectives, hypotheses and analyses (e.g., dynamics of aging, age-relevant models and/or aged subjects; uniqueness of aging or aged population). Eligible areas of inquiry under the Mobility in Aging Initiative encompass the following:

  • biological and physiological factors;
  • behavioral and psychosocial factors;
  • biomedical, clinical and technological innovations;
  • prevention, rehabilitation and management;
  • environmental factors - social, economic, policy and physical;

CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH)
The mission of the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) is to support research into the causes, mechanisms, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions associated with the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood vessels, blood, critical and intensive care, and sleep, for the betterment of the health of Canadians and the Canadian economy. The vision of the ICRH is to achieve international leadership in health research in the circulatory, respiratory and related sciences, through Innovation, Impact and Interdisciplinary collaborations. This will be accomplished by highly ethical partnered initiatives focused on strategic priorities, research training, and research translation that lead to health and economic benefits for Canadians. In March 2007, following consultations with the ICRH community and Institute Advisory Board, the following priorities were identified:

  • Genetics/biomarkers
  • Psychosocial, behavioural, environmental research
  • Technology
  • Sleep, circadian impact on circulatory/respiratory health, metabolism and obesity
  • Injury repair, inflammation mechanisms of chronic disease
  • Transplantation, regeneration, stem cells, bioethics
  • Aging, changing epidemiology

Depending on availability of funds, ICRH will consider supporting highly ranked projects that specifically address one or more of the above priorities. The following priorities may be of particular relevance to this initiative.

CIHR Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health (IHDCYH)
CIHR - IHDCYH promotes and supports research that improves the health and development of mothers, infants, children, youth and families in Canada and throughout the world. Through our support, researchers address a wide range of health concerns, including those associated with reproduction, early development, childhood, adolescence.
Applicants submitting proposals related to reproductive and child health can propose research in any of the 11 Strategic Research Priorities of the Institute.

CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (III)
The Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) in its 2007-2012 Strategic Plan, identified five strategic research priorities, one of which was "Immunotherapy: New approaches through systems biology". As part of a broader, multi-faceted approach to addressing this issue, III is interested in supporting projects, through the Collaborative Health Research Program, that apply a systems biology approach to the study of immune mediated diseases through immunotherapy. The outcome of this research should inform and impact the treatment of diseases involving the immune system including, but not limited to, autoimmune diseases, transplant rejection, immunodeficiency, asthma and allergy. Potential applicants are encouraged to read the workshop report: Systems Biology Approaches to Immune Modulation and Inflammation" posted on the III website.

CIHR Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA)
The vision of Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction is that innovative research will provide new knowledge of the biological and socio-cultural processes underlying neurological, mental and addictive disorders. As such, the INMHA's mission is to foster excellence in innovative, ethically responsible research in Canada that aims to increase our knowledge of the functioning and disorders of the brain and the mind, the spinal cord, the sensory and motor systems, as well as mental health, mental illness and all forms of addiction. The INMHA intends to support initiatives that mobilize and link scientists in innovative collaborative programs across these research domains. The INMHA seeks to translate this new knowledge into a better quality of life for all Canadians through improved outcomes, health promotion and health care services.

Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA)
IMHA supports research to enhance active living, mobility and movement, and oral health; and addresses causes, prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation for a wide range of conditions related to bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue, skin and teeth. To achieve its vision, IMHA focuses on three strategic priorities:

  • Physical Activity, Mobility and Health
  • Tissue Injury, Repair and Replacement
  • Pain, Disability and Chronic Disease

Partner

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
NSERC is Canada's largest federal funding council in the natural sciences and engineering. NSERC will help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. It will reach this vision by investing in people, discovery and innovation through programs that support university research in the natural sciences and engineering on the basis of national competitions.
